My dear friends I have been dealing with John Ronald Reul Tolkien,Old English Professor in Oxford University, and his Middle-Earth. Do you think that he is a postmodernist writer or he just used things of fanthasy to write his best-sellers.

RE: Is Tolkien a post modernist author, if he is then why?
I think he can be concluded as a post modernist since he has been dealing with the medieval and modern influences in his works of fiction. The most significant example of what mentioned above is 'The Lord of the Rings'. But this masterpiece isn't a concrete evidence for his postmodernity. One cannot claim that he is a post modernist since he wrote a bestseller which has the characteristics of postmodernity. To have an objective look of his postmodernist adventure, one should also read other works as well. I have little knowledge of other works of Tolkien. For me, The middle earth is also an evidence itself for his postmodern look.We can conclude that he has a real postmodern view.

Ok then I think so,yet I am looking for more evidence on his postmodernity. For me, modernity, based on Nihilism and Existentialism is one step behind postmodernity. Lord of the Rings as a fiction and its charecters Frodo, Aragorn and Gandalf as paperbeings are neither nihilist nor existentialists. What do you think about it?

RE: Is Tolkien a post modernist author, if he is then why?
When I was a student ,I read a novel of Kurt Vonnegut, The Slaughter house 5.Then my understanding of postmodernity was almost formed by this novel. It tells the time travels of Billy Pilgrim, a torn-out man by the WWII. His travels are at the psychological base aiming to escape the unbearable realities of the modern world rejecting all the advances it supplies. You cannot draw definite borders to postmodern view of the world or limit its territory. This fantasy creatures you listed above and their imaginary world ( described in his middle earth) can be evaluated as neopagans and evangelical Christians in the postmodernist spectacle. You also know postmodernism rejects Christianity.
You don't meet gods and spirits in The Lord of the Rings, for their creative work finished long before the current story began. Yet, I support my first claim that I said one cannot label a work of art as postmodern when it only has some characterisics of postmodernity.
